The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019)
The discovery of the Periodic System by the Russian scientist, Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 is considered one of the most important and influential achievements in modern science. To recognize the importance of the periodic table of chemical elements, the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO proclaimed 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019).” The IYPT 2019 also commemorates the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.
As the common language of science, the periodic table captures the essence not only of chemistry, but also of physics, biology, astronomy and other basic science disciplines. For the past 150 years, the periodic table has been a unique tool, enabling scientist to predict the appearance and properties of matter on the Earth and in the rest of the Universe.
The IYPT 2019 is an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the importance of its discovery, understanding and the many uses chemical elements have in our daily lives.
